The area now known as Stratton was first settled in 1783 by Benjamin Stratton and his family, who had migrated from Connecticut. Throughout the 19th century, Stratton remained a modest agricultural community, with farmers cultivating the fertile valleys and hillsides. In 1961, the Stratton Mountain Ski Resort opened its doors, quickly becoming one of the premier ski destinations in the eastern United States.
The development of the ski resort brought a newfound prosperity to Stratton. While the town’s year-round population remained small, the influx of seasonal visitors and tourism dollars revived the local economy. Stratton Mountain Resort expanded over the decades, adding new trails, lifts, and amenities, solidifying its reputation as a world-class skiing destination.
Today, Stratton remains a charming Vermont village with a thriving ski industry at its core. The town’s historic buildings, including the Stratton Meeting House and the Stratton Town Offices, have been carefully preserved, providing a glimpse into Stratton’s rich past. The ski resort continues to draw visitors from around the world, ensuring that this small town in the Green Mountains remains an essential part of Vermont’s cultural and economic fabric.
